MY ESSAY ESSAY
In ," Young Goodman Brown," the author Hawthorne communicates the theme of how our beliefs can change what we think they really are by using plot, tone, and symbolism.Young Good Man is a story about a Man who is very religious and lives in a town of secrecy, the story starts of with him going to the forest for a walk while he leaves his faith(wife) behind and while he's on the walk he meets and old man who is presumably the devil and the old man reviles that all the people he looked up to/ had faith(not his wife the literal meaning) in are not what they seem and are devil worshipers. The things is that he doesn't know if it was real or not because everyone is acting normal and that would explain all the things that happens, but its a town surrounded in secrecy so he question everything.
Plot is how the story is going and what keeps it going and the author uses the plot to show the charter(young Goodman Brown) go through the journey from showing his beliefs and then later making him question it. For example when young Goodman is on his way for a walk in the forest and meets the old man( or devil), he keeps telling himself," I won't go any further," but he still continues to go because of the plot.Young Goodman begins to question everything and by the end he doesn't even know what to believe in.The plot advances him on into showing that our beliefs can change everything we think about and his descent into madness.
Tone is the way the story is meant to be like in this case uncertainty and the author Yong Goodman Brown views on everything. For example the tone of the story is first regular and just normal, but as the story progresses the more the tone changes from normal to somewhat scary and mysterious and this helps show the reader that things are not what they seem, and Young Goodman also learns that his whole town is a place of secrecy and then as he awakes the next day the tone changes to mysterious because he don't know if what he witnesses was real or not and that's when the tone helps the reader feel the uncertainty and the power of our beliefs.
The author uses symbolism to show that our beliefs can change everything by making things that mean something to Young Goodman Brown while also meaning something. In the story he uses symbolism to convey a message like with his wife faith. For example in the beginning Young Goodman decides he is going to go on a walk and he leaves his Faith(wife and actual faith) behind so he can go alone. While on the walk an old man who is presumed to be the devil shows him that things are not what they seem and he believes this because he is not there with his faith to protect him from the things that are being told to him and because of that he can no longer see things the same way.
