FAHRENHEIT 451 ESSAY
Fahrenheit 451 is about society and how it affects people .Fahrenheit 451 takes place in a future where firemen burn down houses, people are made outcasts by not following the norm, and people are too busy with technology and distractions to notice what is going on in the world. Their word is one controlled by the society they live in.
In Fahrenheit 451 firemen burn houses that contain books. They burn books because the society they live in had deemed them too problematical. When Beatty said,"Coloured people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it. Someone's written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Bum the book." he is proving the point that the society they live in doesn't want these books because they could cause people to react in such a way that makes them unhappy and because of that they have decided to get rid of books.
In Fahrenheit 451 Clarisse is labeled an outcast because society does not agree with the things she does. Clarisse likes to pay attention to details like the flowers or the road signs, she is curious, carefree, and asks lots of questions and in this world that is considered strange and she is then made an outcast. When Clarisse said, "I've got to go to see my psychiatrist now. They make me go. I made up things to say. I don't know what he thinks of me. He says I'm a regular onion! I keep him busy peeling away the layers." it shows that because she is considered different by the society they are trying to change her.
In Fahrenheit 451 their society is too busy with the distractions of technology that the people don't know what is going on with the world. People of this world are really affected by technology for example Mildred, she only really cares about her technology like her seashells so much so that she learned how to read lips so she wouldn't have to take them off. After Beatty comes to their house because of suspicion they might have books all Mildred thought of is ,''She thought about it. Her face grew amazed and then horrified. "He might come and bum the house and the `family.' That's awful! Think of our investment. Why should I read? What for?" "What for! Why!" Mildred thinks only of her "family" or screens that she only seems to care that if they get caught they would burn down her screens. Mildred is not the only one everyone is like this we know this because Montag mentions that people don't even know that they is a war that is going to happen it is based around their whole society to focus more on materialistic things .
